The Break-Even Point
LCL (Less than Container Load) rates are charged per CBM (Cubic Meter). FCL (Full Container Load) is a flat rate for the box.
Generally, the break-even point sits between 13 to 15 CBM. Once your freight hits 15 CBM, it is often cheaper, faster, and safer to book a 20-foot FCL, even if it leaves 15 CBM of empty air.
Operational Risks of LCL
- Delays: Cargo must be consolidated at origin and deconsolidated at destination CFS (Container Freight Station). This adds 4-7 days to transit time.
- Damage: Your cargo is sharing space with unknown commodities and is handled multiple times via forklift.
- Customs Holds: If one shipment in an LCL container is flagged for a customs exam, the entire container is delayed until the exam is complete.
